Welcoming a baby into your family is a life-changing event filled with precious moments. As parents, capturing these fleeting moments can be invaluable for creating lasting memories. In-home newborn photo sessions have grown in popularity among my families as they are seeking a comfortable and intimate setting for their newborn portraits. This blog post explores the beauty of in-home newborn photo sessions, what to expect, and how to prepare for them.
The Advantages of In-Home Sessions

One of the biggest benefits of in-home newborn photo sessions is the comfort and
convenience they offer for all taking part! After bringing a little one home, parents and families have a million tasks, emotions are high and sleep is but a memory; venturing out for a photo session can be overwhelming.
By choosing an in-home session, families avoid the stress of traveling and adjusting to unfamiliar environments. The extreme fear of forgetting or not packing enough items to leave the house is taken right away.
Older siblings can come and go in and out of the session space as they please. Speaking of siblings, fur siblings get to be part of these sessions as they are family too.
In-home sessions allow for a true personal touch. The warmth of a cozy nursery or a bright living room can provide beautiful meaningful backdrops. These settings tell a unique story, highlighting the family’s personality and the bond with their newly arrived family member.
The Timing
Timing for an in-home newborn photo session is not as critical as a studio session. In-home sessions can take place anytime between arrival home to two months old.
As the focus is not only on the newborn but the family its self I place a higher priority on family adjustment and recovery.
In-home sessions are also great for littles who have spent time in a special care nursery or NICU. Sometimes these sweet friends come home on set schedules and with lots of medications being home will not take them out of their schedules.
Preparing Your Home
Preparing your space for an in-home newborn photo session can significantly enhance the final images. Here are some tips to consider while getting ready:
Declutter: Eliminate items that may distract from the main subject—the baby. A clean environment creates a serene backdrop for the photos.
Lighting: Natural light works best for newborn photography. Open curtains and shades to let in as much natural light as possible. Photographers favor soft, diffused light, so consider this in your planning.
Additionally, choose a couple of cozy areas in your home that showcase your family's style. For instance, the nursery or a favorite reading nook can provide a comfortable setting. Lastly, minimal props can add special flair. Incorporate a beloved blanket or a family heirloom. Soft, simple outfits will also enhance the images without being too busy.
Truly only worry about the room(s) that the session will be taking place in life is crazy busy now do not go absolutly crazy cleaning spaces where the camera will never see. I truly will not judge I have lived the newborn life twice I do not care how the living room looks if the session is taking place in the nursery etc.

During the Session
On the day of the shoot, approach the session with an open mind. Babies can be unpredictable and they have a mind of their own; things do not go exactly as intended. Babe might deside that they are not going to sleep like they normally do during the session time or that they only want to be held by one parent. We move a babes speed trying to make the session a success for everyone.
Holding the babe or snuggling together for candid shots make heartwarming images. Photographs of genuine interactions between family members often become the most treasured keepsakes.
Things to Remember
In-home newborn photo sessions offer an intimate way to capture the exciting moments of welcoming a new baby. From the comfort of your home it is easy to capture the genuine interactions between family members. These sessions create opportunities to make lasting memories.
As crazy as it is to embrace the journey it is important you savour each fleeting moment with your little one. Remember these days are hard but are so precious and are some of the most magical you will ever experience!!
