Golden Hour Before Baby | O & C Maternity Session

There’s something really special about photographing people you already know and care about. You walk into the session already knowing the connection between them, the little ways they make each other laugh, and the excitement sitting just beneath the surface as they wait to meet their baby. That was exactly what this maternity session with O & C felt like.

When we first started planning their session, one thing mattered most to mama-to-be: golden hour. She wanted that soft sunset glow wrapping around these memories, and honestly, I couldn’t have agreed more. I suggested one of my favourite locations — one that always feels quiet, peaceful, and absolutely magical once the sun starts to dip.

One of my favourite parts of preparing for sessions is helping clients with outfits, and this one was no different. I love seeing everything come together in a way that feels natural, connected, and true to them.

Then session day arrived… along with the rain.

Thankfully, the storm moved through just as quickly as it came. The skies cleared, the air felt fresh, and it almost felt like the evening was resetting itself just for them.

When we arrived at our first spot, I told them we’d get the “one posed photo” out of the way first. You know the one — both looking at the camera while dad holds the baby bump. I always make sure to capture a few classic portraits because while my heart lives in storytelling imagery, I know parents, grandparents, and loved ones often treasure those more traditional photos too.

After a few clicks, we all laughed and I told them, “That’s the only time you’ll feel awkward or heavily posed tonight.”

And honestly? That’s exactly how the rest of the session felt — easy.

The rest of the evening was filled with movement, connection, and quiet little moments. I prompted them instead of posing them. Things like:

“Walk this way while looking at each other.”

“Snuggle in and just take this moment in.”

And one of my personal favourites:

“Hold the baby bump like babe is already here.”

Those prompts always create the most honest moments. The little smiles. The soft touches. The way couples naturally settle into one another when they stop thinking about the camera and start focusing on each other instead.

Near the end of the session, I pulled dad out of frame for a little while so we could fully celebrate mama. Because maternity sessions are about both parents, but there is something incredibly powerful about documenting a woman in this season of life. Strong, soft, emotional, excited — all at once.

And let me tell you… the wind absolutely understood the assignment.

It moved through her dress and hair at the perfect moments, almost like it had been hired specifically for the session. The kind of movement photographers dream about.

As we started walking back to the cars, camera still in hand (because photographers never truly stop shooting), we passed the most beautiful flowering bush glowing in the golden hour light. The shadows it cast across mama’s bump were unreal.

So naturally… we stopped again.

I had mama stand where the light and shadows met, gently holding her bump while dad stepped in to cuddle close to their little bean. Then I picked a flower from the bush for mama to hold for a few final images.

I remember telling her to take the flower home and press it. How special would that be if bean turned out to be a sweet little girl?

My eyes immediately darted to dad — the only one who knew the secret.

I loved every second of this session. Not just because the light was beautiful or because the images turned out dreamy, but because I got to spend time with friends during one of the most meaningful seasons of their lives.

That’s the thing about maternity sessions for me. They’re not just about documenting a baby bump. They’re about preserving the waiting. The anticipation. The connection before everything changes.

If you’ve been dreaming about a maternity session that feels less about posing and more about slowing down together, you are exactly why I photograph the way I do.

Whether it’s golden hour in a quiet field, cozy moments wrapped up in each other, or documenting the anticipation before your little one arrives, my goal is always the same — creating space for you to simply be present with the people you love most.

The perfectly posed images are wonderful to have, but years from now, I truly believe it’s the movement, connection, and feeling behind the photos that will matter most.

To O & C — thank you for trusting me with such a beautiful season of your story. I already know your little bean is so deeply loved. 🤍

And if you’re currently in this waiting season too, I would love to help you tell your story.

xoxo
